Both blessings and funerals are intimately related, let me explain!
The custom of blessing the animals is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. For The Vicar of Dibley Geraldine who is struck at how upset people are when their pets die and resolves to hold a special day in Dibley when everybody is encouraged to bring an animal to church. Of course the day was a huge succes. So much so that I took a leaf from her book. One thing usually leads to another I realised that I too could hold a Pet Blessing at my small farm which I had at the time but have performed recent ones here on the central coast.
I was so proud to see my two cats accept all the “strangers” from neighbouring farms drift in. Amidst the barking, braying, meowing, quacking, squeaking, honking, bleeting and mooing we sang hymns and prayed for their safety all followed by a feast catered for all.
So now back on the Central Coast I continue to bless the animals albeit my venue has changed.
Please let me know if I can help arrange your pet blessing or funeral.
